Kadavu is Fiji's fourth largest island, located about eighty kilometers south of Suva, Fiji's capital. Officially known as the Kadavu Group, it includes the islands Kadavu, Ono, Galoa and several rocky outcrops on the Great Astrolabe Reef. This mountainous island group is known for its rocky cliffs, adventurous diving, spectacular waterfalls and bushy rainforest. Its largest village Vunisea is located in the center where the island is almost split in two near Ngalao Harbour and Namalata Bay.
Although quite remote, off the main tourist track and with very few permanent inhabitants, Kadavu offers lots of activities. Highlights include its natural beauty, water taxiing as the main form of transport and extremely rugged landscape with very few roads. Its tropical interior is a bird paradise with many different types of parrots such as the colorful protected Kadavu Parrot, the Kadavu Fantail and the Kadavu Honeyeater. You can go hiking towards the 822m high Nabukelevu (Mount Washington) or get wet while surfing at some of its fantastic waves. Gorgeous beaches can be found all around Kadavu with Ndru beach holding the record of longest beach on the island. Fishing is spectacular since the ocean is full of trevally, coral trout, wahoo, sailfish and blue marlin. Especially scuba diving is for most tourists the reason to go here. The nutrient waters surrounding Kadavu contain many fish and offer some of the best dive sites in Fiji.
Popular dive sites can be found in the northeast of Kadavu beyond Ono Island where the Great Astrolabe Reef connects with the reefs just south of Suva and Pacific Harbor. This long reef (one of the longest in the world) is excellent for both scuba divers and snorkelers. Besides this world famous reef you can visit several other popular reefs such as the Namalata Reefs, Solo Reefs, Soso Passage and the Tavuki reefs. The Naigoro Passage Marine Reserve can easily be accessed from Waisalima and is one of the protected marine breeding grounds in Fiji. Whale sharks and manta rays often cruise by and it is very common to see many pelagic while diving at one of the steep drop-offs.
