Fiji consists of more than 300 islands of which more than 100 are inhabited. The largest are Vanua Levu and Viti Levu with Fiji's capital Suva. Beautifully situated in between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour, you will find this city astonishing. Green gardens, palm trees, historic museums, markets, shopping and excellent dining are amongst the touristic highlights.
The Yasawa Islands are known as the best place to observe soft coral, while the western Malolo Barrier Reef of the Mamanuca Islands offer steep walls and exciting drift channel dives. The Mamanucas are also home to world-renowned beach resorts such as Castaway Island, Beachcomber Island, Treasure Island and Bounty Island. Going southward along the coral coast we will find the beautiful dive areas of Pacific Harbor, Beqa Lagoon and Yanuca Island. From here it is also possible to visit the Kadavu Group with its Great Astrolabe Reef. Central Fiji, often referred to as Lomaiviti or Ovalau, is considered as one of the best locations for diving. Especially the liveaboard areas in the Koro Sea near Nananu-i-Ra, Bligh Water and Namena are paradises on earth. Vanua Levu's best scuba diving is found at the island Taveuni, separated by the Somosomo Strait, with the popular and very pretty dive sites of Rainbow Reef. Liveaboard enthusiastic can book a tour to the islands of the Lau Group, already halfway towards Tonga, and find there some undiscovered coral reefs and dive spots. The volcanic island Rotuma is isolated at 450km north of Fiji with no real lodges besides camp spots. For professional divers with their own equipment visiting Rotuma is well worth the effort.
One of the best times to dive Fiji is probably April and May. This is the end of the season for both manta rays and turtles while it is the prime mating season for grey reef sharks. Whales are present in Fiji from September to November. There is diving throughout the year, for beginners with simple confined open water courses to professional multi day liveaboard trips. There are coral islands, volcanic mounts, limestone islets and atolls. There are fringing reefs, steep coral heads, bommies, action thrilled drift dives, drop-offs most on white beaches and a variety of marine life rivaling the best dive spots in the world.
